Logos, Devices & Typefaces
As the University of Melbourne grows in national and global stature, the need to ensure accurate brand presentation becomes critical.
The logo, devices and typefaces are the foremost visual expression of the University of Melbourne brand and form the basis of the University’s brand identity. The logo is also a formally registered trademark of the University.
A clear understanding and the correct usage and application of brand elements will project a consistent image and help to trigger an immediate visual association with The University of Melbourne. It will also effectively communicate an image that reinforces the University’s long-standing academic reputation and tradition of excellence.
The University of Melbourne’s logo reflects the heritage and quality of the brand and is comprised of the signature logo with the distinctive angel with wreath of laurel and Southern Cross in the blue crest. The University motto, Postera Crescam Laude (I shall grow in the esteem of future generations) is displayed in the ribbon device that proudly wraps around the base of the crest. The crest is used in combination with The University of Melbourne wordstyle and "Melbourne Blue" colour to create a distinctive brand mark of world renown.
When used, these guidelines provide specifications for the use of The University of Melbourne logo and assist the users of the logo, devices and typefaces to comply with internal and external legislative requirements. These guidelines also protect the integrity and durability of the University’s claim to its trademark and when applied, ensure familiarity and relevance among the target market worldwide.
These guidelines must be observed when creating all marketing material including print, web, electronic or other special promotional accessories. The success of the brand application requires the utmost commitment from The University of Melbourne Team.
The Logo Suite
The new, refined mark reflects the heritage and quality of the brand and is an evolution of the original device used in 1863.
These logo suite guidelines outline the precise use of the University’s logos, its application to stationery and enhanced use when promoting the brand in competitive environments.
The University logo suite is comprised of a range of logos for various applications with most sets available in stacked and horizontal versions. To ensure there is no future misapplication of old or incorrect logos, all approved artwork files are available on DVD 1 in the front of this manual or can be downloaded from the University’s Intranet site. Only logos from these two sources are approved.
The following specifications should be adhered to in all application situations. However, if a situation arises where there is no guideline available please submit a detailed drawing or design to the University Brand Manager.
